CORK SHOOTING HAS THE HALLMARKS OF ANOTHER GANGLAND KILLING
Tuesday, 22 May 2007
Labour Party Spokesperson on Justice, Brendan Howlin, has said that the discovery of a man’s body in a remote area of Cork last night has all the hallmarks of another drug-related gangland killing. Deputy Howlin said this latest killing would maintain the record-breaking murder trend that has emerged in recent years.
“As we await the results of the post mortem on the body of this man, it has emerged that he was a significant figure in the drugs trade in Cork. As such it is suspected that this killing is linked to the drugs gangs who peddle such misery in communities throughout the country.
“Not only that, these merciless killers are also prepared to take life with little afterthought should someone trespass onto their patch or cross them in any way.
“The Gardai have neither the manpower nor the resources to take-on the drug gangs on a permanent basis. Gangland crime has increased markedly in recent years and murder rates for last year were at record levels.
“In a desperate attempt to solve in ten weeks what they could not do in ten years, Fianna Fail and the Progressive Democrats presented an anti-crime package to the Oireachtas earlier this year. Unfortunately insufficient time was available to fully debate the new Criminal Justice Bill although the opposition did achieve significant changes to the legislation as originally presented.
“The Labour party is determined to put crime at the top of our agenda in government. We will provide more Gardai on the beat in neighbourhoods and have put forward a series of judicial reforms including a new Sentencing Act.
“We have shown our determination to act against the drug gangs in the past when the Rainbow Government established the Criminal Asserts Bureau in response to the murder of Veronica Guerin. While this latest killing demonstrates the extent of the challenge in taking-on these ruthless drugs gangs the Labour Party is determined to come to terms with the scourge of serious crime.”
