COWEN MUST THINK AGAIN ON SPORTS SHOOTING FEES
Thursday, 26 April 2007
Labour TD Brendan Howlin has called on the Finance Minister to think
again in relation to the massive increase in fees demanded of sports
shooters in his recent Finance Act.
“Thousands of people enjoy sports shooting, a traditional pastime in
Ireland. The imposition of a penal tax on firearms holders is unfair
and unjust.
“Buried in the small print of this year’s Finance Act, Brian Cowen has
introduced a range of new licence fees well beyond anything that was
expected or that could be regarded as fair.
“The pattern of stealth taxes introduced by the Fianna Fail/PD
government is continued by this action. Sportsmen and women are just now
realising the extent of the tax levies to be imposed on them.
“The level of these fees has to be reconsidered and amended.”
