UNCERTAIN POLICY CAUSES CONFUSION AND FEAR FOR HUNDREDS OF FAMILIES
Thursday, 30 August 2007
“The issuing by the Department of Justice of hundreds of letters
concerning the non-EU spouses of EU citizens resident in Ireland has
caused huge fears for families long resident in this country,” Labour’s
Justice Spokesman Brendan Howlin has said.
“It is my understanding that foreign embassies have been inundated with
calls from their citizens and they are at a loss to know what exactly
the Irish Department of Justice intends to do in relation to non-EU
citizens resident here.
“There is a clear requirement for an immediate statement of policy by
the Minister for Justice so that families in this country know exactly
what their status is and can plan for their future. The current
uncertainty is unacceptable and inhumane and must be speedily brought to
an end.”
