Brian Cowen is due to attend a summit of EU Leaders in Brussels today.
Brian Cowen is now a caretaker Taoiseach of a broken government and does not have any authority to make decisions on behalf of the Irish people.
While the summit is formally to deal with energy issues, it will also discuss the ongoing Eurozone debt crisis and job creations proposals. It is expected that during lunch the leaders will discuss Franco/German proposals on reform of the Stability Fund. All of these subjects are of potentially significant importance to the Irish people.
Brian Cowen and other EU leaders should be aware that any position adopted by Mr. Cowen will be subject to review by any new government which receives a mandate from the Irish people on February 25th.
The Labour Party is calling on Mr. Cowen to give a commitment, in advance of the opening of the summit later today, that he will not make any decisions or commitments that might tie the hands of the next government.
The Labour Party is determined that the disastrous EU/IMF deal agreed by Fianna Fail will be renegotiated. Brian Cowen must do nothing that would limit our capacity to do this.
